In 1872, the Franco-Prussian War had just ended leaving Paris in a state of extreme disarray. The defeated French relinquished control of Alsace-Lorraine to Germany and agreed to pay Germany 5 billion francs. To further isolate France; Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Russia form the Three Emperors’ League. Rome, recently annexed by Italy, had just become the Italian capital. In the United States, U.S. Grant was reelected President and huge fires leveled Chicago (in 1871) and a large part of Boston (in 1872). The U.S. also establishes the first National Park at Yellowstone. In the 2 years prior to this map being published, Canada has grown dramatically with addition of Manitoba and British Columbia to the Commonwealth.
This incredibly detailed map was hand-painted by German craftsman. This is an excellent example of the extraordinary workmanship that set German maps apart from those of any other country. This map shows the various towns, cities, roads, railways, mountains, rivers and other geographic features throughout South Africa and Madagascar.

Due to the INCREDIBLY high shipping prices charged for OVERSIZE shipping, shipping charges may be higher than quoted for items that measure more than a total of 70" (matted height + width).
