1841 Hand-Colored, Lithographed Map of Maine
- Authentic Old Map -
by Thomas G. Bradford |

When this map was made, the Governor of Maine had recently delared war on England over the disputed border with New Brunswick. Before any actual battles took place, the dispute was settled by the 1842 Webster-Ashburton Treaty, which brokered a border compromise.
Despite what is shown on this map, there were only a few operating rail lines in the entire country when this was created. There was great excitement about the immediate potential for railroads in the early 1830s (much like the Internet craze in the 1990s). However, a financial panic in 1837 slowed the growth of railroads to a crawl, until Congress began providing land grants in the early 1850s (the first was for the building of the Illinois Central in 1851. Apparently, Mr. Bradford wanted to make sure his maps would not be outdated too quickly, so he added every proposed railroad to his maps, assuming they would be built. From what we can find, the only operating rail line in the state, in 1841, ran from Bangor to Orono.
This beautiful hand-painted map of was created in 1838 by Thomas G. Bradford. Although the copyright shows 1838, this piece was probably printed in 1841.
If you are looking for an unusual piece of art, to decorate a home or office, these truly "limited-edition" prints are perfect. Antique maps are extraordinary examples of the 19th Century printing and engraving arts. As conversation pieces they are unequaled. Each beautiful old map is an actual snapshot of our history. Any of these, increasingly rare, works of art are also some of the most thoughtful (and personal) gifts you can give. Unlike so many other gifts, antique maps and prints allow you to present someone a piece of their past.
