While the U.S. was deeply embroiled in a bloody civil war for a large part of this decade, the rest of the world was far from stable. In Europe in the 1860s, wars raged across the Italian peninsula in the early part of the decade, leading to the creation of the Kingdom of Italy. Later in the decade wars break out across the continent of Europe as Austria and Prussia invade Denmark gaining control of Schleswig, Holstein, and Lauenburg. In 1866, all manner of changing alliances lead to the Austro-Italian War. In 1868 a revolution in Spain leads to Queen Isabella II being deposed.
In North America, Napoleon III attempts to establish an empire in Mexico early in the decade. Following the end of the Civil War he to remove French troops from Mexico and the French puppet, Maximilian is defeated and executed by Juarez. In Central America Honduras, Nicaragua, and San Salvador try to establish a Central American Union in 1862. In 1867, the Dominion of Canada is established by the British North American Act.
The Asian continent was falling under greater European colonial dominance. In China in 1860, British and French troops defeat the Chinese at Pa-li-Chau and in 1862 a rebellion is suppressed near Shanghai. The Meiji dynasty is restored to power in Japan when the Shogun abdicates and the shogunate is abolished. In the Pacific, in New Zealand, the Second Maori War began in 1860 and continued throughout the decade.
The 1860s saw the continuation of European exploration and the beginning of serious colonization of large parts of Africa. The Boers and Basutos battled from 1865-1866 in southern Africa. In 1868, the British sent troops to Ethiopia and captured Magdala. The next year the Suez Canal opened, linking the Mediterranean with the Red Sea.
These incredible maps show the Eastern and Western Hemispheres. Countries, rivers, and mountains are shown in detail. This is a rare and fascinating snapshot of the world of 140 years ago.
The map you will receive was actually created in the 19th century. Each is slightly different as the colors were hand-applied to each piece individually in the mid-19th century. When the few of these maps in our collection are gone, we will be unable to offer any more. As these are authentic antiques expect slight flaws and age spots. These are the "patina" of time and add to the character of each piece.
If you are looking for an unusual piece of art, to decorate a home or office, these truly "limited-edition" prints are perfect. Antique maps are extraordinary examples of the 19th Century printing and engraving arts. As conversation pieces they are unequaled. Each beautiful old map is an actual snapshot of our history. Any of these, increasingly rare, works of art are also some of the most thoughtful (and personal) gifts you can give. Unlike so many other gifts, antique maps and prints allow you to present someone a piece of their past.
