young nation's westward expansion and the beginning of America's reign as a world power. No longer focused merely on internal affairs, the United States began to get more involved in international issues. This external focus logically began with our nearer neighbors. In the years prior to 1898, a growing insurrection of Cuban peasants against Spanish colonial rule grew increasingly important to the American people. As the revolt grew, more food and munitions poured into Cuba from America. In early 1898, the battleship Maine steamed to Havana to "protect American interests." On February 15th, moored to a buoy in the harbor, the Maine exploded and sank. The real cause of the explosion is a hotly debated topic to this day.
Following the sinking of the Maine, the stormy relationship between the U.S. and Spain grew increasingly strained. The cry for War with Spain grew louder by the day, largely incited by American newspapers battling for subscribers. On April 20th, both Houses of Congress passed joint war resolutions. The first shots were fired on April 22nd, with the capture of a Spanish Steamer in the Straits of Florida. In the months that followed Admiral Dewey totally destroyed the Spanish fleet in the Phillipines. Not a single American ship or sailor was lost in the lopsided victory. In Cuba, Theodore Roosevelt and his "Roughriders" were battling with Spanish forces, on San Juan Hill and elsewhere. By August, with its entire fleet in ruins, Spain was forced to accept terms of peace that eventually led to U.S. control of Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Phillipines and Guam. Coincidental with the end of the war, the American flag was officially raised over the Hawaiian Islands following the annexation of the islands one year earlier.
This over 100 year old work was made using the wax-engraving map printing process pioneered by Rand McNally. This process created high-quality, low-cost maps and made the company the leading creator of maps in the United States (a position they enjoy to this day).
If you are looking for an unusual piece of art, to decorate a home or office, these truly "limited-edition" prints are perfect. Antique engravings, & prints are extraordinary examples of the 19th Century printing and engraving arts. As conversation pieces they are unequaled. A beautiful old print or engraving is an actual snapshot of our history. Any of these, increasingly rare, works of art are also some of the most thoughtful (and personal) gifts you can give. Unlike so many other gifts, antique prints allow you to present someone a piece of the past.
