 1862 Hand-Colored, Lithographed Antique Map of Illinois & Chicago

Throughout the first half of the 1860’s, the attention of the nation was focused on the Civil war that raged throughout much of the United States. After Abraham Lincoln’s election in 1860, South Carolina seceded from the Union. In 1861 the first shot of the war was fired at Ft. Sumter. Kansas became a state.
The first hint that this would be a protracted and bloody struggle came in 1861 when Union forces were defeated at Bull Run (Manassas). The Union was, again defeated at this same location in 1862. Also in 1862, Ulysses S. Grant won the Battle of Shiloh and Robert E. Lee’s invasion of the north was turned back at Antietam. President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation (effective January 1, 1863), while Congress authorized the construction of a railroad to the Pacific.
In 1863, Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia defeated Union forces at Chancellorsville, VA. Grant captured the Confederate fortress city of Vicksburg and Lee was defeated at Gettysburg. West Virginia split off from the Confederate sate of Virginia to become a state in the Union. Arizona and Idaho became U.S. territories.
General Grant was made Commander-in-Chief of the Union armies in 1864 and begins a series of bloody battles that will soon have the Army of the Potomac surrounding Richmond and Petersburg, Virginia. General Sherman began his march to Atlanta and then, on to Savannah. Abraham Lincoln is reelected President in the wake of Union success on the battlefield. Also in 1864, a local militia group massacred hundreds of Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians at Sand Creek, Colorado. Montana became a territory and Nevada was admitted as a state.
In 1865, the Civil War ended. Lee surrendered April 9th at Appomattox and the final confederate army laid down its arms May 26th. Within the week after Lee’s surrender, President Lincoln was assassinated. With the capture of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, the painful process of reconstruction began in the South. The end of the war also allowed construction of the transcontinental railroad to accelerate. By 1867, it had brought so many settlers to Nebraska that it became a state. Also in 1867, Russia sold Alaska to the U.S. for $7.2 million.
In 1868, President Andrew Johnson is impeached by the House and was acquitted by the Senate. Later in the year, war hero, Ulysses S. Grant was elected President. By 1869, the nation was not only becoming reunited north to south, but was linked east to west with the completion of the transcontinental railroad connecting the Atlantic coast with the Pacific.
This is one of the finest maps ever created by Samuel Augustus Mitchell, Jr. These maps were printed from lithographic stones taken from steel engravings and hand-painted in some of the most brilliant inks ever used on a 19th century map. This incredible map shows geographic features, towns, cities, and railroads in great detail. This picture cannot begin to do justice to the stunning floral border surrounding this map!!
